A DISABLED girl who was declined entry onto a bus after her pass didn’t work is searching for the man who paid for her fare.

Ruby Sanders attempted to board the 57 bus at around 3.15pm last Tuesday but was told, after her prepaid pass didn’t work, that if she couldn’t pay she would have to get off the bus.

As she has learning difficulties, Ruby was unsure what to do in this situation, but a passenger, who was watching what was happening, could see that Ruby was getting distressed and paid for her fare so that she could get on the bus.

Previously Ruby was given travel training to prepare her for the 57 route that she would have to take, but the training did not cover what would happen if her pass didn’t work.

“The bus driver was quite aggressive towards Ruby,” said her mum, Stephanie.

“Someone on the bus got up and paid for her fare which I thought was really lovely.

“Ruby said thank you to him but I want to thank him personally too.

“When she got home she was crying and was really upset about the situation. The driver asked her for the money and then said to her that if you pay you can stop on but if you can’t you’ve got to get off.

“It’s tough. Ruby carries things with her saying she has a disability, but she doesn’t know to get it out and show people. If the man hadn’t have stepped in then I don’t know what would have happened to her.

“When she told me I said ‘you should’ve rung me’ but she didn’t think to do that because of her disabilities.

“She had enough money in her purse to pay her fare but she didn’t think to use it.

“Just to be able to do that route on the bus, she was given travel training with other people with learning difficulties and they taught her for six months what to do, but you can’t always prepare for everything that could happen.”
