Lee Johnson says Paul Digby's out of the blue loan move to Ipswich Town will benefit all parties.

Digby, 20, signed for Mick McCarthy's Tractor Boys on Saturday and will remain in Suffolk until the end of the season.

The homegrown midfielder is the club's longest serving player, but has failed to establish himself under a string of Barnsley managers.

Johnson said of the former England under 19 international: "I think he's got a big name in youth football. Ipswich asked for him to come in for a couple of days on trial and behind the scenes they set up a deal potentially but at the moment it's a loan for them to have a look at him.

"I don't think he's under any pressure at the moment to go into their first team but it's one that suits all parties at the moment."

Digby made his first team debut aged 16 and later signed a contract until the summer of 2017. He spent time on trial at Manchester United in the summer and has only made three first team appearances this season.

Digby travelled with the Ipswich squad to watch their weekend game against Burnley.
