A BARNSLEY woman is warning dog owners to be on their guard after her tiny terrier was ripped apart by a German Shepherd.

Janet Proud issued the warning after her 10-year-old Border terrier Missy was savagely attacked behind the Engineers Arms in Higham Common Road, Higham.

Missy was taken to the vet but her injuries were so severe she bled to death.

Janet, 52, of Higham Common Road, reported the matter to the police but says she has been told nothing can be done.

She said: "The German Shepherd bounded towards George and ran behind him grabbing my dog by her back end attacking her in a violent frenzy, then dropped her and circled its way back towards the gate and its owner.

"George turned to see the horrific injuries. He dropped to his knees and tried to help the dog and shouted to the man to help him.

"The man climbed over the gate and walked away. George was shouting so loud for help the people from the nearby cottage came to see what was happening, another dog walker took George and our injured dog to the vets at Wilthorpe."

She said: "As any loving, responsible dog owner will know, our lives have been turned upside down by this shocking attack, my heart is broken and in a way I suppose I know deep down that nothing will bring our Missy back."
