DOMESTIC abuse in Barnsley has continued to rise year-on-year with people in their 80s and 90s reporting as victims to police, new figures obtained by the Chronicle have revealed.

A Freedom of Information request to South Yorkshire Police shows the rate of incidents reported by both male and female victims in Barnsley has increased each year since 2014.

Officers investigated 1,035 cases of domestic abuse against women in 2014 and this rose to 1,108 in 2015 and to 1,181 in 2016 with victims as young as 16 and as old as 89 coming forward.

There were 198 reports made to police in 2014 by male victims, which soared to 271 in 2015 and to 303 in 2016, again with victims as young as 16 and the oldest being 92.
