FORMER sprinter Dorothy Hyman was delighted to be presented with a replica of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year - 55 years after she won it.

Dorothy, 77, of Stairfoot, received the trophy from Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe at the annual BBC sports awards ceremony on Sunday.

She said: “I was so pleased.

“I was a little bit embarrassed because there will be other people who have won it who haven’t got a replica.

“It’s a beautiful trophy, and it’s very heavy. I was quite surprised that it’s as big as it is.

“I’ve got a little snug room where I watch television and it is in there so I can see it.”

A campaign to get Dorothy a trophy was started following the Proud of Barnsley awards, at which she said she didn’t have one but had always admired them.

Barnsley East MP Stephanie Peacock said: “I’m thrilled. It may have taken 55 years but we’ve got there in the end.

“The fact that we had such a fantastic response to the campaign shows how the community still hold her close to their hearts and haven’t forgotten her achievements and contribution.”
