A GROUP of year ten students have become the first at Barnsley Academy to achieve their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.

As part of the scheme, over the last 12 months the 17-strong group developed new skills, took part in a range of physical activities including hiking in the Yorkshire Dales and carried out volunteer work.

One of the pupils, Katie Booth, said: “My Duke of Edinburgh experience is something I will never forget. I got to work with some amazing people and learn things that will help me through my life.”

Conner Scarfe added: “The Duke of Edinburgh award was a great experience it enabled me to meet new people, try new things and exit my comfort zone.”

In recognition of their efforts, the group attended a special celebration breakfast held in their honour with Barnsley Academy principal Steve Dixon.

Mr Dixon said: “Here at Barnsley Academy we are committed to ‘education with character,’ ensuring that all of our students have the opportunity to take part in a range of exciting and enriching activities.

“Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme is an important part of that and it’s a particularly proud moment to congratulate our first students on successfully completing their Bronze DoE award.”
