PEOPLE can now dispose of waste paper at all four of Barnsley’s dump-it sites following the phasing out of white recycling bags.

Earlier this year the council ditched the ‘white sack’ which was previously used for kerbside paper collection, and instead now lets people put cardboard and paper together in their blue bin.

But the council faced criticism including from Liberal Democrat Councillor Hannah Kitching after it was revealed there was no contingency for people who had no blue bin, as paper banks were removed from recycling centres some years ago.

It costs £20 for the delivery of a new bin, and Coun Kitching argued the council was effectively forcing residents without blue bins to pay £20 in order to recycle paper.

But now, residents who no longer have a white sack or do not have a blue bin can visit the recycling centres on Smithies Lane, Goldthorpe, Springvale, or West Street Worsbrough to recycle their unwanted paper.

Coun Roy Miller said: “We continue to look at new ways to support recycling across the borough.

“We are investing in a number of improvements to our household waste and recycling centres and have found a solution to provide paper recycling.

“This is another positive step to encourage recycling and allows people who have additional paper to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way.”
