A DYING man has donated the last £1,000 of his savings to help the family of the little boy who died tragically on Christmas Day - after the story ‘broke his heart’.

Bren Ashburn, 65, who is suffering terminal lung cancer, said he was shocked and stunned to read about Ceslavs Didzus, who would have been 12 on New Year’s Day.

Ceslavs had been rescued from the river Dearne more than two years ago but suffered brain damage due to the time he spent under water.

The boy was being cared for by his parents at home, but developed an infection and died on Christmas Day.

“That story absolutely broke my heart,” said Bren, a musician who has donated dozens of musical instruments to schools across Barnsley over the last two years since his diagnosis.
