BARNSLEY now has the second-highest average weekly wages in South Yorkshire after pay grew considerably faster than the national average last year, latest official statistics show.

In 2017 the average weekly wage in Barnsley was £494.70 - an average salary of £25,724.

This was up 3.75 per cent on the previous year and closed the gap behind the national average which - although still higher than Barnsley’s - grew only 2.2 per cent in the year to £552.70 a week or £28,740 annually.

In 2016 Barnsley’s average weekly wages were previously lower than those in both Doncaster and Rotherham, but have now overtaken both. The rate of growth in Barnsley was also faster than that seen across Yorkshire as a whole.

In South Yorkshire only Sheffield now has higher average wages, which grew 3.9 per cent last year to £524 a week.
