AN 85-YEAR-OLD woman who cares for her daughter with Down’s Syndrome and dementia is delighted to be nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

Sybil Davey has suffered several strokes and a heart attack and should probably be letting other people look after her.

But she is a carer for her daughter Lorraine who is 52.

Sybil, of Eaden Crescent, Hoyland, says she saves the taxpayer thousands of pounds by looking after Lorraine at home, rather than putting her into full time care.

She said: “It’s such a wonderful thing to be nominated, to think someone has done that.

“I only do the same as other mothers, I don’t do anything special.

“Like everyone else, I love my daughter and I want her with me.”

Sybil does everything she can for Lorraine - who does have carers - and wants her to remain at home for as long as possible, but she can no longer take out on day trips.

Sybil has no help for herself and chooses to pay someone - from her own savings - to do her ironing having lost the movement in her hands after her strokes.

After her plight was revealed in the Chronicle earlier this year, Sybil was inundated with messages of support and offers of help.
