AN 85-year-old woman who was killed in a taxi which crashed into a wall had only just bought herself a new car - but booked the taxi because she did not like driving in the dark.

Ruth Cocker was returning with friends from her regular bingo night at Hoyland Common Working Men's Club when the crash happened.

The cab, a grey Ford Mondeo, smashed into the wall at 11pm on Wednesday on Sheffield Road, Hoyland Common. There were three other people in the car - an 82-year-old woman, a 77-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man. They were all taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Mrs Cocker, of Rockingham Close, Birdwell, was taken to hospital where she later died.
