LABOUR has maintained the same majority on Barnsley Council having lost a seat to Barnsley Independent Group but snatching one from the Conservatives.

Penistone West's Conservative councillor Andrew Milner lost his seat to Labour's Joe Unsworth - by just 42 votes. In Old Town, Penny Lofts lost her seat to Barnsley Independent Group's Liz Grundy - by just 80 votes.

UKIP came second in six out of the nine seats it fielded candidates in, and council leader Sir Steve Houghton said it had been one of the hardest elections for a long time.

"These national trends we have seen elsewhere, we've seen here in Barnsley but thankfully we've held them off. We're not complacent, we can understand that people are dissatisfied and are looking for something different.

"As a council we have got to bring forward the regeneration of the town centre and we've got to manage the cuts, there is no getting away from that."

He said he was pleased with the gain in Penistone West, but disappointed to have lost out in Old Town.

"We won one and we lost one, so we came out even. I think the problems we've had in Old Town have not helped. We had a very good candidate in Penny Lofts who has worked very hard. She only just lost, despite the national trends. We're going to take a step back and look at how we can make it better and come back much stronger.

"Penistone West was one of our target seats. Joe Unsworth works for the town council and works for the council again. If there is one person that would do anything for the community it's Joe and he thoroughly deserves his victory."

Turnout was 29.6 per cent.
