ROCK stars might traditionally be known for their bad behaviour - but Elsecar Holy Trinity Academy chose its own ‘rock stars’ this week to reward their good performance.

The school has been signed up all year to a rock star maths project, which runs nationally and encourages children to learn their times tables.

It works by linking the maths to a rock star game and those involved build up points.

At Elsecar, the year’s best performer from each class was handed a golden envelope with an invitation to attend school on Wednesday in rock star outfits.

They emerged at lunchtime they emerged to find a surprise limo waiting in the school grounds, to whisk them off on a chauffeur-drive ride.

Lunch was at the Birdwell KFC, where staff entered the spirit of the event and created a ‘VIP area’ for the party.

The trip was paid for by the Friends of Elsecar School group, who raise money to support its work with children.

Headteacher Steve Silverwood said: “The kids were just told to come dressed a rock stars.

“It is basically rewarding children who have worked really hard all year.

“It is about learning their times tables through an online game where the kids are rock stars.

“They accrue more points for the more they get correct.”

The winners were Marnia Amos, Declan Mellor, Freya Bailey, Mollie Rose, Melissa Wilson and Jack Turner.
