A NEW multiplex cinema will be built on the roof of the Alhambra next year according to a shock announcement yesterday by major chain Empire Cinemas.

Plans for the multiplex were first announced back in August 2014 and planning permission was granted in November that year.

It had been due to open by now but the plan never got off the ground and Barnsley Council has since declared its own plans for a multiplex cinema as part of the town centre redevelopment.

But yesterday Empire Cinemas - the largest independently owned cinema operator in the UK - confirmed it would be opening a multiplex cinema in late 2017 developed in partnership with owners of the Alhambra BMO Real Estate Partners.
