A PRIVATE enforcement team brought in to tackle litter and dog fouling issued nearly £2,500 in fines in its first week of action.

Barnsley Council has teamed up with private enforcement agency 3GS as part of its new 'zero tolerance' pilot scheme launched in Barnsley town centre.

The 3GS team started operating in the town centre - in five days it issued 33 fixed penalty notices for littering, totalling £2,475, and referred six people under the age of 18 for reparation duties - 'community service' type activities in lieu of a fine.

Fines of £75 apply for littering and £50 for dog fouling. Failure to pay a fine results in the council prosecuting and at this stage, if proven, it becomes a criminal offence.
