A WORKING model of the Newcomen Beam Engine is being used help students explore science, technology and local history.

Barnsley Museums Learning Service is launching a new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM for short) session for schools, funded by XPO Logistics.

It uses a model of the world famous engineering masterpiece created by Richard Ellam, an expert on the original beam engine.

The session, called ‘The Engine that changed the world’, uses steam and water in exactly the same way as the original machinery, allowing children and families to see and understand how the feat of engineering works close up.

The kit is being tested ahead of the session due to be launched for Science Week in March next year.
