VOLUNTEERS who plan to open a pop-up museum at the Barnsley Main Colliery site have received their second funding boost thanks to help from a local supermarket.

Back in May, Tesco Extra in Stairfoot gave shoppers the chance to vote for a local group to receive funding to help with their projects. The Barnsley Main Heritage Group received the most votes and therefore won the funding.

This week, they received their cheque for £4,000 to help towards the opening up of a pop-up museum within the colliery site.

The group of volunteers has spent hours on the site already by clearing all of the overgrowth, making it more accessible for the public to visit, installed picnic benches and they take part in regular litter picks around the area.

Last month the Heritage Group received a £2,000 Barnsley Boost grant from the council to help with the funding of the new museum. This along with the £4,000 from Tesco will all go towards the installation of the pop-up museum where flooring, walls and lighting will be installed in the site to make it a nice place for people to visit.

The aim of the museum is to preserve the site and to display the rich mining history Barnsley holds.

Work is set to start and the museum is hoped to be open by March next year.
