BRUCE Dyer is a name that requires little explanation for Barnsley fans.
But the former striker, who netted 57 times in 181 games across five years for the Reds, is set to give an honest account of his time at Oakwell that might surprise even the most committed supporter - as he returns to the stadium for a special series of events.
Bruce, 44, has forged something of a second career as a force for change in the local community since he hung up his boots.
And ‘An Evening with Bruce Dyer - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’ promises to cover everything from struggles through his playing days, to finding his faith, to his transformative work at Grimethorpe’s Miners Welfare Sports Ground and the Love Life UK Festival and Church.
The talk is a partnership with Life Stories, a non-profit group which puts on events for high-profile people such as Bruce to engage audiences in smaller, intimate settings.
“I’ve spoken at a few different places and really opened up about some of the struggles I’ve had, and so many people have reached out to me for help and advice as a result,” said Bruce.
“It’s been surprising, in a good way.
“I went through things over my career that people wouldn’t know I went through, difficulties I had to overcome. I’ve never spoken about them publicly before.
“I’m trying to be a role model and a positive inspiration for people.
“If you ever wanted to hear anything about my life and career, I will be talking about it.
“I’m a bit nervous, it’s personal stuff but I’m prepared now to speak about it because it may help someone else.”
The evening at Oakwell, also featuring a question-and-answer session and two-course Christmas lunch, was initially planned for Saturday December 7 - but with that date selling out a further event has been organised on Friday December 6.
Bruce added he was looking to announce a few more dates starting next year.
