Former Barnsley manager Jim Iley, who died this week aged 82, has been praised for his contribution to the club by the leading appearance-maker.

Iley, from South Kirkby, was in the Oakwell hotseat from 1973 to 1978 working with players such as Barry Murphy who ended his 16-year playing spell at the club when Iley left.

Murphy said: “Jim was the hardest trainer I ever worked under, he ran our socks off and was red hot on discipline. But he was a lovely man and I had a lot of time for him. He made me captain which I was grateful for.

“He was a very fine left midfielder in his day then a good manager who brought a lot of talented players to Barnsley and paved the way for the success the club had later on under Allan Clarke and Norman Hunter.”

Barrie Betts, who played 57 games for his hometown club Barnsley in the 1950s, died last week. He was 86.
