BARNSLEY Council’s new chief executive says she has joined the local authority at the perfect time thanks to its ongoing town centre redevelopment.

Sarah Norman, the former chief executive of Dudley Council, took over from the retiring Diana Terris last week and has already set about visiting each of Barnsley’s 21 wards.

She paid tribute to her predecessor’s work in the town, having shadowed Ms Terris in the run-up to the changeover.

“It was only natural to be attracted to the brilliant work that’s going on in the town centre - there’s the fantastic market, the newly-opened library and the wider town centre regeneration.

“There’s a lot to be excited about but there’s also massive benefits to out-of-town centres, the principal towns, which are also receiving improvement works.

“Over the next few months I’ll be making my way round Barnsley’s wards, taking in one or two a week, getting to know the community groups and staff.”
