A SUCCESSFUL bid for funding by Barnsley Council will make roads in the town safer.

Barnsley will receive £1.4m from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund. The money will be used for work on the A628 between Hoylandswaine roundabout and Flouch.

The stretch of road has been assessed as being a potential risk for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Coun Roy Miller said: “The successful funding bid is great news for Barnsley. We’re committed to making our roads as safe as possible and reducing the number of collisions on Barnsley’s roads by working closely with partners including the police to achieve this.”

Improvements will include upgrading the street lighting, making speed limits clearer and creating a shared pedestrian and cycle path.

Work will be carried out in 2019/2020.
