A NEW story trail - inspired by the popular Room on the Broom attraction in Wakefield - was officially opened in a Barnsley park this week.

The story trail at Penny Pie Park in Pogmoor features 11 carvings by chainsaw artist Steve Tarr.

It tells a story written by ten-year-old Lottie Wilson, a pupil at Holy Rood Primary, who was the winner of a story writing competition organised by the school and the Penny Pie Park Community Group.

Lottie was guest of honour at the official opening on Monday, attended by nearby residents, members of the Penny Pie Park Community Group and local councillors Richard Riggs and Phil Birkinshaw.

Lottie’s story, called the Litter Park, is told through information boards around the park, and Steve’s sculptures. It is about a man who lives in the park and gets upset by people dumping rubbish. He sets about inventing things made from items people throw away.

Sarah Haigh, a member of the Penny Pie Park Community Group, said she was really pleased with how Lottie’s story had been brought to life. “Lottie seems really pleased with it, she came along to the event with her family.

“It’s turned out really well, even better than I expected I think.”
