AN ARDSLEY family has organised an event to raise awareness of a rare condition which affects one in every 2,500 babies.

Katie Mitchell, 25, from St Paul’s Parade, is holding a fundraiser at The Alma, Wombwell with the aim of making more mums aware of vasa previa.

Katie’s sister Nicole Higgins, 21, experienced the condition during her pregnancy with ten-week-old Jack, and is a condition where one or more of the baby’s placental or umbilical blood vessels cross the entrance to the birth canal and rupture, causing the baby’s blood and oxygen supply to drop.

The condition can be deadly, with a mortality rate of 95 per cent if not diagnosed before birth. But a simple colour doppler test, currently not used as standard because of the rare nature of the condition, can diagnose it, leading to an infant survival rate of 100 per cent.
