A FARMING family has stepped in to preserve the future of a village pub and stop it from being swallowed up by developers.

The Pheasant Inn on Cross Street at Monk Bretton is thought to date from the mid 19th century.

It was up for sale with a guide price of £175,000 and was sold by a sealed bid process. The highest offer - which is undisclosed - came from the Richmond family, who own and run Manor Farm, also on Cross Street.

The family said their main reason for buying the pub was to prevent it from a similar fate to the nearby Butcher’s Arms on High Street, which has stood empty for a decade and fallen into disrepair.
