A BARNSLEY family was left stranded on the Greek island of Corfu facing spiralling costs after their two-year old daughter ended up in hospital with a severe case of chickenpox.

Little Joni Roughley’s sores from the usually fairly harmless bug became infected making her extremely poorly and in need of hospital care.

She first became ill last Thursday and they had been due to fly home on Monday.

“It was really frightening because she was that poorly with it. She had a temperature of 41,” said her mum Claire Edwards, 36, of Sheffield Road, Birdwell.

“She’s covered head to toe. They don’t seem to really have chickenpox here so she’s been treated like a leper.”

Dad Jon Roughley and mum Claire did pay for travel insurance through Asda, but they were left worrying they would have to pay for their own extra hotel accommodation their flights once Joni is finally allowed to return home - expected to cost £1,000.
