BARNSLEY could launch a comedy festival in the spring with the possibility of a literary event to follow in 2017 as the town's culture bosses seek to build on recent progress in bringing increased numbers of visitors to the town.

It is expected visitor numbers for the current year will be way ahead of last year, as a result of an initiative which has seen the Experience Barnsley museum open and a wide range of other centres improving their appeal to visitors.

The objective is to boost the economy by bringing more people into the town to spend money and £15m has been spent on projects to help that over the last decade - but it has cost the council virtually nothing, with most of the money coming from grants and outside funding.
