SHORT films explaining how exercise can improve the quality of life for people with lung diseases have been commissioned by a specialist health trust.

South West Yorkshire NHS Foundation Trust is having the films made to explain its pulmonary rehabilitation programme and the benefits of it.

It involves education and exercise for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other chronic lung diseases, and the videos are aimed at both and referrers such as GPs.

A spokesman for SWYFT said it had been proven to improve exercise tolerance, functional ability and quality of life, and could help to reduce hospital admissions and breathlessness levels. Pulmonary rehabilitation during and following a flare up can also assist recovery.

The trust’s programmes are run by experiences staff. All patients will be seen by either a nurse or physiotherapist prior to a gym assessment.

The service is run from venues in Cudworth, Goldthorpe, Hoyland and Gawber and sessions take place twice as week for six weeks. They include simple exercises designed to improve muscle strength and endurance as well as skills to self-manage chest conditions.
