MORE than 6,500 people who were diagnosed with cancer have received financial help, thanks to a scheme run in partnership by Macmillan Cancer Support and Barnsley Council.

The Barnsley Macmillan Benefits Advice Service, which is funded by the charity, offers a lifeline to local people by helping them access financial support which may be available.

Following a diagnosis, people are faced with the worry of having to find hundreds of pounds a month to cover the costs of having cancer, such as loss of income, travel costs to and from hospital and higher heating bills.

The service started in 2007, and has now helped 6,573.
