A 16-YEAR-OLD has been banned from entering Barnsley Interchange for a year after he lit and threw a firework near the town centre transport hub.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Barnsley Youth Court on Tuesday where he admitted possessing and throwing a firework in a public place.

Chantel Lowery-Green, prosecuting, said he had lit the firework in the interchange’s doorway before throwing it towards Eldon Street.

The teenager, from Darfield, is a regular before the court and was given the banning order as he is known to frequent the interchange and loiter with friends near its entrance.

Julian Brook, defending, said: “He accepts it was a stupid act and he should have known better. The small pyrotechnic went off and a lot of it was down to his peer group’s attitude.

“His record is not the best but it’s hoped his offending will now stop as if not, the custody threshold will soon be crossed.”

Magistrates, who also imposed a four-week 8pm to 7am curfew, said the boy’s latest court appearance should act as a ‘final warning’.

He was also told to carry out a 14-day community payback activity and ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge.
