A BARNSLEY man who faced a major surgery on his spine so he could walk fought back to fitness thanks to a programme of simple exercise.

Michael Smith 28, of Gawber Road, was always a very sporty until three years ago when he was diagnosed with scoliosis - a severe curve in his spine.

As the condition deteriorated Michael's shoulder blade began protruding on one side. If left untreated it can lead to fatal heart and lung problems.

But a series of exercises and stretching to learn how to stand and walk properly has dramatically improved his physical appearance, he has stabilised his curve and is pain free for the first time in years.
