POLICE have issued an update regarding the mugging in the Victorian Arcade last Friday.

Five people have been re-arrested on suspicion of robbery and are currently in police custody.

A 28-year-old man arrested initially has not been re-arrested, but remains under investigation.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson urged people to be cautious about what they post and share on social media, after CCTV footage was released earlier this week.

The spokesperson said: “Six people have been arrested by police today (Wednesday 13 May) in connection with a reported robbery of a man in Barnsley on VE Day.

“Shortly after 1pm on Friday 8 May, it is reported that a 41-year-old man was robbed by a group of people as he walked down an alleyway in Barnsley town centre.

“The 41-year-old was assaulted, hit in the face and pulled to the ground, before his mobile phone and cigarettes were taken.

“Five men, aged 34, 28, 27, 25 and 19, and a 21-year-old woman, were initially arrested on suspicion of robbery and released under investigation.

“Following new information being received, five of the six have been re-arrested today on suspicion of robbery and are currently in police custody.

“The 28-year-old man has not been rearrested but remains under investigation.

“We are aware that CCTV footage of the incident is circulating on social media and are urging everyone to be cautious about what they post and share in relation to this footage, so as not to compromise the ongoing investigation.
