The hosts took the lead through former Oakwell youth player Harrison Biggins but the Reds led 2-1 at half-time thanks to Jacob Brown’s first career goal and a fine strike by Kieffer Moore. Mamadou Thiam came off the bench to secure the win in injury-time.
Head coach Daniel Stendel made one change to the side that was due to play Burton Albion a week earlier before the game was called off. Victor Adeboyejo, who would have made his first start against Burton, was replaced by Mike Bahre, who played behind Moore with George Moncur and Brown on the wings.
Adam Jackson, making his first appearance in League One, nodded wide twice from set pieces by Alex Mowatt who almost scored twice from two intended crosses but goalkeeper Alex Cairns got the ball away.
At the other end, Wes Burns forced a simple save out of Adam Davies then Ched Evans headed over a free-kick from close range but it was the hosts who took the lead on 19 minutes.
James Husband powered down the left wing and fired in a low cross which was tapped into the empty net from close range by Biggins whose father Wayne used to play for Barnsley.
The Reds had looked sloppy early on but responded well to the goal and levelled after half an hour. Brown ran onto a good ball by Mowatt and, after a scramble involving goalkeeper Cairns and a defender, he tapped into the open net for 1-1.
It was 2-1 ten minutes later when Moore picked up the ball just outside the box and fired a powerful effort into the bottom left corner for his seventh goal of the season.
The second half was a dull event, with Fleetwood only really threatening from free-kicks as Biggins almost netted another but just missed the ball stretching at the back post while both Burns and Cian Bolger headed wide. Goalkeeper Davies dropped a cross in his box then had to scramble back to tip Lewie Coyle’s lobbed effort over the bar.
Barnsley barely threatened except Mowatt from two wayward Mowatt long-range efforts. But the visitors made it 3-1 in injury-time on the counter-attacker when Adeboyejo played in Mamadou Thiam who lashed hone from a tight angle on the left of the box.
