David Flitcroft says 'a lot still has to happen' before he is made Barnsley manager for next season, after the club confirmed they will offer him a new contract in the coming week.

Flitcroft led the Reds to safety in a remarkable second half of the season, culminating in a 2-2 draw at Huddersfield Town on Saturday, then director Don Rowing said the club want him to be the permanent boss.

But Flitcroft suggested there was still a lot of negotiating to be done before he makes a decision. He said: "We're so behind the eightball in terms of our preparations for next season because we had to focus on staying up. A lot still has to happen.

"I don't want to be scratching around like this club has done for the last five or six years. We have not had a constructive chat yet but I want a bright future for Barnsley Football Club with youth, enthusiasm and drive."
