A COUNCILLOR has called for action against a group of fraudsters who have allegedly been charging residents for waste removal and dumping it in a nearby alleyway.

Coun Phillip Lofts, from Old Town, wants immediate action on two individuals who are said to have been targeting Stocks Lane residents in particular.

“We’ve had a couple of reports of two people walking around Stocks Lane, touting for rubbish and charging money anywhere from £20 to £100, and then never collecting the rubbish and pocketing the cash,” Coun Lofts said.

“Residents need to be aware of people walking around, in these admittedly hard times, and touting for business and taking money, then not delivering the goods.

“I hope the individuals involved are brought to justice and off our streets.”

Paul Brannan, head of safer communities at Barnsley Council, added: “These two individuals are well-known to us and have a history of this type of offending.

“We are in the process of building a case to try and prosecute them again.

“We will be doing everything we can to bring them to justice for this offence.”
