RATS have invaded a Wombwell man's home as a result of fly tippers using wasteland nearby.

"The rat catcher has been to my house five times over the past few weeks to deal with the rats in my basement," said Barry Marshall, 69, of George Street.

"They have been coming through my basement wall from the dumping area and I've found rat droppings on the floor. I was told I have had up to six rats living in my basement."

Barry said the problems started roughly a year ago, when people began to leave sofas, mattresses and other rubbish in the empty wasteland area behind the empty Superdrug store on the High Street.

"The owner of the Superdrug building put a fence up but it has been kicked down. A big bin on Diamond Street was also overflowing with takeaway rubbish and that can't help."

After notifying Coun Dick Wraith of the issue, a representative from the environmental health department has visited the street and the process of exterminating the rats has begun.
