A FOOTBALL match involving a local amateur team was abandoned after 40 minutes because of intimidation and threats from the rival team's fans.

Players for Grimethorpe Sports were subjected to a barrage of abuse as they played a team called Tusaale at Burngreave in Sheffield on Saturday.

The Grimethorpe team's manager Simon Trollope, 37, a former professional player, says he has never heard anything like the taunts, threats, jibes and insults that were hurled at his players.

Now the FA is waiting to receive the referee's official match report before deciding if any action should be taken.

Simon, who once played for Rotherham United, said: "We are all used to touchline banter- but this was on another level, it was outrageous and it was so wrong, I have never heard anything like it.

"There were suggestions that some of the gangs were armed with knives, but I didn't see that.

"What I did see and hear and what my players and the referee had to put up with was totally unacceptable and there can be no room for behaviour like that in football."
