A FIT young Barnsley footballer has been put into an induced coma after being struck down by a rare condition that attacks the nervous system and causes paralysis.

Aaron Tate, 24, has been diagnosed with Guillian Barre Syndrome, a disease in which the immune system attacks its own nerves rather than germs in the body. It is often triggered after an infection, such as food poisoning or flu.

The former semi-professional footballer, who now plays for Westville FC and Houghton Main FC, had been fit and well up until a couple of weeks ago when he started to suffer from a severe bout of sickness and diarrhoea.

He thought it was just a bug but his condition worsened. Last weekend he deteriorated further before collapsing on Monday.
