A LANDMARK footbridge in the heart of the town centre which will mean the permanent closure of the Jumble Lane level crossing is still being planned - despite improvement works to the existing level crossing itself beginning next week.

Network Rail has announced the tracks running through Barnsley’s railway station and over the level crossing are to be replaced as part of its wider railway upgrade plans.

The crossing will be closed to cars and pedestrians from next Friday to Monday, and the railway and station will be closed next Saturday and Sunday while the works take place.

The Chronicle asked Barnsley Council whether works to upgrade the crossing meant plans to close it and replace it with an attractive new pedestrian walkway had been abandoned, but Coun Roy Miller, a spokesman on the council’s ruling cabinet, said this was not the case.
