DEDICATED ukulele and banjolele players are being urged to unleash their inner George Formby in Barnsley.

The South Yorkshire branch of the George Formby Society meets every month in Barnsley and the members all bring along their instruments and play.

Wigan-born Formby became famous playing comic songs on his banjolele in black and white films in the 1930s and 40s.

Member Neville Roe, from Howbrook, said they would love to attract new members and meet on the fourth Monday of every month at Ward Green workingmen’s club.

“We are ukulele players and we are just normal people off the street,” said Neville.

“We play George Formby songs and ukulele songs, as long as it’s a ukulele or banjolele we encourage it. George Formby is the connection that brings us all together, but we are mainly ukulele players.

“We also have four conventions every year in Blackpool.”

He said the group, which was set up in 1997, has about 30 regular players, and the public are allowed to come and listen.

“We can have up to 60 people come along to play,” said Neville. “We’d love more people to come along.”
