A WORLD-RENOWNED hairdresser showcased his expertise at a special event in Barnsley.

Celebrity hairdresser and former Barnsley College student Andrew Barton returned to demonstrate his talent and talk about his extensive career in hairdressing at the college.

Andrew spoke to current hair and beauty students about his career path and gave tips on being successful within the competitive industry, as part of his Andrew Barton London Education (ABLE) contemporary training programme.

ABLE was created to meet the needs of full-time students or apprentices and the programme gives students an extended qualification linked to the hairdressing industry. During the event, Andrew awarded certificates to the first graduating class of ABLE.

Andrew started the event by sharing how his hairdressing journey began as an apprentice who trained within the college. He later carried out live demonstrations that showed his modern twist on creative cutting, styling and dyeing.

Dane Haywood, a level three hairdressing apprentice, won the opportunity to work with Andrew at the event.

“I have followed Andrew’s footsteps by completing the same apprenticeship at Moodyhair in Barnsley so was honoured to support Andrew at the event,” he said.

“The ABLE programme has not only developed my hairdressing skills but also given me experience on how a successful business operates.”

Andrew said: “I visited the college as part of the syllabus for the ABLE programme which was exclusively launched at Barnsley College, the first in the UK to have the ABLE scholarship, and as part of that the students get to spend the day with me and I get to spend the day with them.

“It’s really exciting I get to share new techniques and ideas and also to touch base with the ABLE students who are following the scholarship.”
