FORMER policeman Kevan Hamilton has died in Barnsley Hospice aged 56.

Kevan, of Rectory Lane, Thurnscoe, served with the police until his retirement in 2013, and was the Thurnscoe community bobby in the early 90s.

He was involved in the force Crucial Crew educational programme went on to work in the police’s firearms department for many years.

In 1999 he made headlines when he suffered a massive heart attack after a martial arts session and was resuscitated by staff and paramedics, pushing for them to receive an award for their efforts in saving his life.

His widow, Michelle, said: “Before he died he told Elizabeth, our daughter, that she had got an extra 18 years with him.”

After he retired from the police he went to work at Dearne Valley College as a teaching support and Michelle said he was looking forward to returning in September.

“He loved working there, he was mainly in the workshops,” she said.

He also leaves a son, Christopher.

A funeral will be held on Monday at Ardsley crematorium at 3.30pm, led by Spiritualist minister Kevin Shepherd. Funeral arrangements by D H Maccabe, 01709 893152.
