What a whopper! Veg grower David Johnson, 49, had beginner's luck with this giant pumpkin, now on show in The Allotment Deli in the Hoyland Centre.

Two strong men had to haul the pumpkin, nicknamed Archie, into the shop for a charity ''guess the weight' competition.

Shop owner Charlotte Oughton said David grew Archie on his allotment on Wath Road. "It's his first giant vegetable and is a special variety called Big Max," she said.

Archie will be on show until Hallowe'en when he's destined to become Hoyland's biggest ever Jack O' Lantern.

Proceeds from the guess the weight contest will be split between the winner, Macmillan Cancer Support and meningitis research.
