THE Honorary Freedom of the Borough has been bestowed on four of Barnsley’s best known sons and daughters for exceptional service.

Egyptologist Joann Fletcher, poet Ian McMillan, former Lord Lieutenant David Moody and folk singer Kate Rusby were bestowed with Barnsley Council’s highest honour at a ceremony in the town hall on Tuesday.

It was last awarded to Lord Roy Mason in 2007.

During the ceremony, council leader Sir Steve Houghton spoke about each of the recipients and their work.
