THE campaigners fighting for a return to free rail travel for pensioners have vowed to fight on despite talks with rail bosses breaking down.

Barnsley Retirees Action Group (BRAG) has led the protests and met with bosses from Northern Rail and South Yorkshire Passenger Executive last week.

Ahead of the meeting BRAG secretary George Arthur had been hopeful they 'wouldn't have called the meeting' unless they had some fresh proposals to share, but said the talks had been a failure.

"We were astounded they had bothered to meet up to tell us that they had nothing to say."

A spokesman for the transport executive said: "We understand that some people are upset the concessionary travel scheme had to be changed and that senior pass holders now have to pay half rail fare. But the protesters also have to understand this was done reluctantly because there isn't enough money to fund a free scheme any more."

They held protests at the train station on Friday and again on Monday.
