Two friends from Wombwell have run 10km in memory of a baby who died before her first birthday.

Gemma Bilton, of Wright Crescent, and Claire Tasker of Jones Avenue, both 29, took part in the Sherwood Pines 10k on Sunday in support of Bluebell Wood children’s hospice, which supported Gemma’s niece Molly before she died.

Molly was born in October 2005 and diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophe type one – a muscle wasting condition – and was cared for at home by Bluebell Wood staff, before the hospice was built, prior to her death in September 2006.

Early years worker Gemma and cake decorator Claire have been taking part in local runs and power walks around Wombwell as part of their training.

Gemma said: "I'm taking part in the run to give something back to Bluebell Wood as they gave Molly everything she needed in her last weeks with us.

"They also gave us much-needed family support at an emotional time and I would like to make more people aware of the hospice’s role in helping children and families when in need as we will never forget what Bluebell Wood did for us."
