A FRUIT and veg voucher scheme is being launched in Barnsley as part of efforts to tackle food poverty among low income families by making sure they are able to eat healthily.

The new pilot scheme is being run by the council and it is the first time the project has taken place outside London.

It will involve between 80 and 120 families that fall under the Central area family centres - Kendray and Worsbrough, Worsbrough Common, Stairfoot, Dodworth and Monk Bretton - over a 12 month period, with about £30,000 being ploughed into vouchers for those deemed most in need.
