ALMOST £500,000 has been allocated to local high streets across the borough to make sure centres other than Barnsley Town Centre benefit from regeneration work.

When the Better Barnsley and Glass Works scheme were announced a few years ago, the council pledged to set aside a ‘Principal Towns’ fund to make sure other district centres also benefited.

A report to be presented to councillors breaks down funding awards including £272,000 for improvements to the High Street area in Goldthorpe.

These include resurfacing and provision of additional spaces to Whitworth Street car park, footway, signing/branding and shop front improvements.

In Darfield, £42,000 plus £5,000 of match funding from businesses has been allocated towards resurfacing of the church car park and improvements to five shops.

In Grimethorpe, £16,500 has been allocated towards improvements to existing planters, a deep clean of High Street and new signage.

In Mapplewell, £100,000 will go towards the creation of a car park on waste land at Spark Lane.

In Stairfoot, £52,450 with £5,310 of volunteer match funding will go towards new signage/information boards, improvements to existing wall and railings outside shops, improvements to gateways and park and a piece of art work.

The grants, outlined in a report to be seen by the council’s ruling cabinet tomorrow, are part of the wider £5m Principal Towns scheme which will see a host of improvements made at centres including Athersley, Bolton-upon-Dearne, Cudworth, Darton, Darfield, Dodworth, Hoyland, Goldthorpe, Grimethorpe, Lundwood, Mapplewell, Stairfoot, Royston and Thurnscoe.
