SECRETARY of Locke Park Working Men's Club Malcolm McFadyen has died aged 77.

Malcolm, of Spencer Street, Barnsley, died last Friday at Barnsley Hospital after a short illness.

He had been secretary of the club since 1983, and had also served as secretary of the Yorkshire branch of the Club and Institute Union until his retirement at 65.

He was in part motivated to give up that position after a close shave in 2005 when he had been on CIU business in London and had just left Russell Square when one of the July 7 bombs went off there.

A former Holgate Grammar School pupil from 1951 to 1956, he had worked for Barnsley Council maintaining street lighting for about 30 years, and he also ran the Barnsley branch of the Manchester United Supporters Club.

He leaves a wife, Betty, daughters Karen Senior and Joanne Adams, four grandchildren, as well as his brothers Alec and Paul, and sisters Angela Wortley and Susan Beck.

A funeral service will be held today (Monday) 11.30am, at Barnsley Crematorium.
