THE future of a Grimethorpe group which has taught first aid to children for more than 50 years has been plunged into doubt.

The village’s award-winning St John Ambulance branch, which operated from the Welfare Hall, off Clear View, has been closed - although its founder hopes its closure will only be temporary.

Terry Haynes, 79, has clocked up 54 years’ service but ill health means he is no longer qualified to teach youngsters.

“We have several volunteers who are wanting to be trained up by St John Ambulance so they will then be in a position to carry Grimethorpe’s branch on. It’s a deeply distressing time as it’s been a huge part of my life for more than 50 years and we’ve become arguably the country’s finest unit.

“We’ve won so many awards, the children are absolutely great and although it’s been a sad week, I am confident we will be able to reopen.”
