BARNSLEY will become a giant game next month as thousands of residents compete to walk, run, push, scoot or cycle the furthest.

‘Beat the Street’, which runs from June 5 to July 17, will see more than 200 special sensors called ‘Beat Boxes’ appear on lampposts across Barnsley.

Players tap cards and fobs on the boxes to track their journey and earn points for themselves and their team.

Schools, businesses and community groups across the town will be competing against each other to see if they can travel the furthest to win hundreds of pounds of sport and fitness vouchers.

Coun Chris Lamb, cabinet spokesman, said: “We are incredibly excited to be bringing Beat the Street to Barnsley and can’t wait to see how far everyone is able to walk, run, cycle and scoot during the challenge.
